Black Friday, Christmas, Mother's Day, birthdays... Every year, many of us choose perfume. But why is this gift idea so appealing? What really lies behind this intention? And most importantly, how to find the ideal perfume when you want to give it as a gift to someone? We reveal everything in this article!
Perfume to show your love
Have you ever received perfume as a gift? But not just any perfume, THE perfume that suits you, the one you'll buy again and again for years... If so, you probably thanked the person who gave you that gift very much. Finding your perfume is a sweet daily pleasure.
It is said that perfume is an easy gift. Yes... but no! Offering an eau de toilette is a proof of your love. With this gesture, you show that you know the person, their tastes, their expectations, their habits... And that's particularly touching!
It's therefore not surprising that offering perfume is seen as a token of love (friendly, fraternal... and more if affinity!). Perfume is intimate without being too intrusive, it's a subtle token of friendship or love.
But if you choose it randomly or without effort, your gift may also have the opposite effect to what you expect! A poorly chosen perfume gives the impression that it was given out of spite... and that's not the desired result. But then, how to properly choose a perfume to offer?
Continue reading, we'll tell you all about it right after!
On what occasions to offer perfume?
Perfume is suitable for all major occasions and shows your love for the person who receives it. It's time to show that you know them perfectly!
- For Mother's Day: in May, we celebrate all mothers. The perfect opportunity to give a gift that shows your gratitude and love.
Giving perfume for Mother's Day is a gesture loaded with symbolism, because a mother's scent often evokes deep and moving memories. From childhood, a mother's perfume is associated with tenderness, security, and unconditional love. Giving perfume to your mother is like giving her a memory that reflects this intimate and precious connection and prolongs these unique and personal moments, while bringing a touch of novelty.
Why not take advantage of spring to offer a floral perfume or a hesperide (mainly composed of citrus)? It's the ideal season to offer fresh and delicate notes, like orange blossom, jasmine or bergamot. In this season, you can also opt for a whole new experience with aromatics that perfectly celebrate the transition from spring to summer.
-
For Father's Day: it is sometimes difficult to find good gift ideas for fathers. Every year, many of you rack your brains trying to figure out what to give your dear dad who says he doesn't need anything... Again, perfume often turns out to be an excellent idea, because it's useful, pleasant, and makes people happy.
To extend the bond with these gentlemen, we generally prefer the bold notes of oriental perfumes with their characteristic scents. You can also opt for woody perfumes, very popular for men.
-
For a birthday: whether your relationship is friendly, familial, or romantic, perfume always pleases. It's a true token of love that demonstrates your commitment. A perfume is not chosen lightly; it's a very personal product. So, if you manage to find the specific perfume that will perfectly match the person wearing it, you're almost sure to please.
-
For Christmas: it's an opportunity to reunite with family, celebrate the past year, and start a new one under the sign of new experiences. Isn't that a wonderful reason to try new scents? Introduce a whole new universe to the person who will receive the precious bottle, take them to new accords they may not have tried yet, but which, you are sure, will suit them wonderfully. Giving a perfume at Christmas is also offering a touch of magic, a touch of elegance that will accompany the person throughout the year, evoking with each spray the festive spirit and warm memories of the holidays.
How to choose a perfume without making a mistake?
Perfume is not just a smell: it's an accessory. It complements your outfits, asserts your character, and leaves an olfactory memory for those around you. It's an olfactory signature.
For this reason, giving perfume is an intimate gesture. To hit the mark, you need to know the other person well, their tastes, habits, desires...
Don't panic, we'll give you some tips to find THE perfect perfume! The essential thing is to know the person you are giving a perfume to:
- Their identity: how old are they? Are they Gen Z, Millennials, or Baby Boomers? Depending on their age, they probably won't be receptive to the same perfumes.
-
Their character: each scent conveys an idea, an atmosphere. If you give a musky perfume to someone very colorful and radiant, you risk making a faux pas. If you are addressing someone energetic and joyful, a fruity perfume, with citrus notes for example, will be perfect! But on the contrary, if you are addressing someone more moderate, more discreet, avoid overly singular scents and prefer something more woody.
-
Their style: Again, it's all about taste. Remember, perfume is an accessory. Can you imagine wearing a very elegant, sober, and refined outfit, and completing it with a fluorescent pink backpack? Well, it's the same for fragrances! Match the perfume to the person's clothing style: it will become an integral part of their style characteristics.
-
Their daily use: In perfumery, there are several products: eau de parfums, eau de toilettes, solid perfumes... Each corresponds to a different type of use.
Some people will perfume themselves every day, others prefer to wait until they have "a good reason"... And even apart from the frequency of use, you need to think about the use that is made of the perfume you are offering.
Take someone who travels a lot. The ideal is to offer them a solid perfume: small and compact, it is easy to transport and does not pose a problem on planes. An extravagant and assertive person will have no trouble wearing a perfume or eau de parfum. But a reserved person, who perfumes themselves occasionally, will probably prefer an eau de toilette, lighter and more discreet.
As a reminder, the products you find in perfumery are more or less concentrated in pure perfume. Here are some elements to help you make your choice:
- Eau de parfum: eau de parfum is one of the best-selling products in perfumery. Its concentration rate is between 15 and 20%. It is an asserted scent that lasts over time.
- Eau de toilette: much lighter, eau de toilette is more subtle. Concentrated up to 5 to 15%, it is less overpowering and fades a little faster. It is generally appreciated when you want to perfume yourself occasionally or lightly for an ordinary day.
- Solid perfume: alcohol-free, solid perfume is a healthier alternative for the skin. At Nolença, it is composed of more than 90% natural ingredients. Its solid form allows it to be carried everywhere, including on planes.
- Their values: at a time when consumers are paying more and more attention to the composition of their cosmetics, it is important to find a product that matches the values of the person to whom you are offering it. More and more organic products are appearing in perfumery, composed mainly of natural ingredients and less aggressive for the skin and the environment. This is a very important point to take into account when choosing your gifts.
And if you're a bit confused by the different terms specific to perfumery, here's a summary of some key points to select the perfect perfume:
Understanding the meaning of notes in perfumery
There are three types of notes in perfumery:
-
Top notes: the first ones you smell after spraying. They are often intense but very volatile, lasting only a few minutes.
-
Heart notes: less overpowering, they constitute the main scent of the perfume, which will remain for about 6 hours after spraying.
- Base notes: essentially used as a fixative, they discreetly accompany the other scents and can remain for more than a day on clothing.
Understanding the meaning of olfactive families
If you ask a sales assistant for advice, they will certainly ask you questions about the character of the perfume.
Do you want a floral perfume? Or fern notes? More spices or hesperidic?
These questions relate to the families of scents. There are 7 of them and they characterize the different effluvia. When you know them, it is easier to answer these questions!
-
Orientals: here we find spicy and sensual accords (vanilla, smoky notes, ambergris)
-
Aromatics: as in cooking, aromatics are composed of herbs also called "aromatic herbs" (thyme, basil, rosemary...)
-
Florals: hard to go wrong with this term which refers to floral notes, similar to those found in gardens (rose, jasmine, tiare, lily of the valley...)
-
Woody: generally used as the structure of perfumes, woody notes fix and reinforce other scents to awaken the senses (cedar, vetiver, sandalwood, patchouli...)
-
Chypre: this olfactory family is based on accords of patchouli, oakmoss, rose, bergamot and jasmine.
-
Fougère: here is a family whose origin is easy to guess! It obviously takes its name from ferns and their characteristic forest scent (oak, vetiver, geranium, lavender, ...)
- Hesperidic: or to put it simply "citrus" (lemon, mandarin, bergamot, orange...)
Some tips for giving perfume
You now know the main criteria for choosing the right perfume: consider the individual's personality, character, world, age, and lifestyle.
But if you're worried about making a mistake, here are some tips to maximize your chances:
- When you give the perfume bottle, make sure to offer the corresponding sample: this will allow the recipient to test it beforehand and exchange it if the scent doesn't suit them. And that's good, because for every perfume purchased, Nolença sends you a sample to test the perfume before adopting it!
- Keep the receipt, or even better, ask for a gift receipt so the item can be exchanged if needed. No one wants to be stuck with a perfume they can't stand the smell of... An exchange is better than a failed gift!
- If you know the person's favorite perfume, you can offer it in a different format, and for that, you have plenty of choices! Change the concentration by opting for a perfume or an eau de toilette if they are used to eau de parfum, or offer a larger version of the same bottle. Finally, some brands offer refills, which are more ecological!
- And most importantly: trust yourself! What matters most is the soul and intention you put into your gift.
Giving pleasure by offering a unique experience
Offering perfume is always a touching gesture, especially if you make the effort to find a product that perfectly matches the person who will receive it. It's an opportunity to introduce them to new scents, or even new practices! Have you heard of mix&match?

Giving perfume without choosing for them
There remains a doubt that no advice can fully alleviate: what if the fragrance doesn't suit them? This is exactly why we created The Gift — five sealed samples and a gift card for a 30 ml bottle. The person wears each perfume for a full day, at home, on their skin, then orders the one they preferred. You offer the experience and the budget; they keep the choice. And you don't end up with a bottle politely tucked away at the back of a drawer.
