5 tips to make your perfume last longer

Who hasn't experienced the frustration of feeling their perfume fade throughout the day, leaving only a vague memory of its scent by evening? Yet, there are simple yet effective tricks to avoid this problem!

Ready to discover all the techniques to make your favorite fragrance last until the end of the night? We're sharing some tips with you:

1. Prepare your skin and create a good base for the fragrance

For both the longevity of your perfume and the care of your skin, it is essential to moisturize it regularly. This is the foundation of any skincare routine!

Remember to drink water regularly throughout the day. And if that's not enough: apply an unscented moisturizer. It hydrates your skin and serves as a base for your perfume. It retains the fragrance and allows it to effectively set on your skin.

Little bonus: hydrated skin retains fragrance better. On dry skin, perfume is absorbed very quickly. Hydration is key!

Moreover, you can also choose your skincare products based on your perfumes, and vice-versa! Whether it's your shower gel, body lotion, or scented oil, you can match them to your favorite perfume to enhance its scent, or conversely, choose complementary scents to create a unique trail. This is the science of layering, or, as we like to call it at Nolença, Mix&Match.

2. Apply your perfume correctly: our practical tips

There are strategic places to apply your perfume to make it last longer. These moving areas also help diffuse scents as you move throughout the day.

On the skin, we advise you to spray your perfume directly on your pulse points: neck, wrists, hair, behind the ears, inside the elbows.

Be careful not to rub hard during application. For example, rubbing your wrists together is not a good idea, contrary to popular belief! Friction alters molecules and changes scents.

Second option: one of the best ways to make your perfume last longer is to spray it on your clothes and other textiles.

Skin is a living material; it alters scents throughout the day, especially with movement and perspiration. Textiles, however, will keep the scent stable for several days!

If you are sensitive to certain perfume components, like alcohol, this is also a good tip to continue wearing perfume without damaging your skin.

Caution: if you use a scented laundry detergent with a strong smell, you risk altering or masking your perfume applied to your clothes.

3. Take care of your bottle to preserve the perfume

The longevity of your perfume doesn't just depend on how you apply it; it also depends on how you store your bottle.

Indeed, perfumes are sensitive to temperature variations and light. It is therefore highly recommended to store your bottle away from light and heat, preferably in a dry place to protect it from humidity.

If your perfume is exposed to sunlight for too long or subjected to high heat, it risks "turning." Its olfactory properties and longevity could therefore be altered. And an altered perfume will not last as well on your skin or clothes.

If possible, do not store your perfume bottle above a heater or on a windowsill, but rather in a drawer or cupboard.

4. Carefully choose your type of perfume

We talk about "perfume," but there are actually several types of concentrates:

  • Parfum: Pure perfume has an essential oil concentration ranging from 20% to 40%. It is the most concentrated form you will find on the market, the one with the most intense scent and the longest lasting.

The use of pure perfume is generally reserved for evenings and special occasions. It is recommended to be careful when applying not to use too much, to avoid an overly cloying result.

  • Eau de parfum: Concentrated at 15% to 20%, eau de parfum is certainly less concentrated, but still intense. With a duration of 6 to 8 hours, it is generally used daily, as it lasts all day.

  • Eau de toilette: Light and subtle, eau de toilette has a concentration of 5% to 15%. Its sillage is more volatile and fades after a few hours (generally 4 to 6 hours).

It also gives an impression of freshness due to its lightness and is particularly appreciated by consumers who desire a soft, not-too-overpowering fragrance. Its use is rather reserved for daily wear, especially during warm seasons.

  • Eau de Cologne: its low concentration of essential oils (only 2% to 5%) makes it a very light product. Its role is more to refresh than to perfume.

This is why it is most often used after showering or in the summer. In an eau de cologne, you generally find fresh notes as well as citrus notes that reinforce the sensation of lightness and freshness.

Depending on your needs, if you want your perfume to last all day without reapplication, perhaps avoid lighter eau de toilette, which lasts less long on the skin.

5. Make sure you always have a perfume refill with you

The best solution to smell good throughout the day is still to carry a travel spray with you! This also works with a sample of your favorite perfume.

These small sizes allow you to do "touch-ups" throughout the day, if you deem it necessary. For important events, it's a good option!

Discover solid perfume

You can also opt for solid perfumes: small and discreet, they slip easily into any bag and can be applied discreetly several times during the day.

With this format, there's no perfume to spray; just apply it to your pulse points with a simple gesture, like a balm.

Properly applying your perfume to prolong its wear: a recap!

As you've understood, there are many simple tips to help your perfume last all day long. Here's a summary of the essential points to remember:

  • Regularly moisturize your skin so it diffuses the perfume better
  • Apply your perfume on pulse points or on your clothes
  • Keep your bottle away from heat sources
  • Opt for a more concentrated eau de parfum when you want a long-lasting fragrance
  • Carry a small refill with you wherever you go!
Of course, there's no magic solution to make perfume last forever: fragrances are designed to evolve over time. But by applying these few tips, you should already get good results for a perfume that lasts on your skin all day long!
